    Confederate Privateer John Yates Beall, CDV Photo Card
    with handwritten
    inscription and
    2 Cent Revenue Stamp on back
    Photo is believed to have been taken while Beall
    was imprisoned and awaiting execution at Fort Columbus,
    Governor's Island, New York harbor.
    Handwritten inscription on back, I do not know with
    any certainty who wrote it:
    "I die in the hope of a resurrection,
    and in the service and defense of
    my country"
    Stamp on back:
    2 Cents, U.S. Inter. Rev. Playing Cards stamp
    Snap Shot:
    Born: Jan. 1, 1835 - Died: Feb. 24, 1865
    1861 - enlisted in 2nd Virginia Infantry
    Appointed by Jefferson Davis to conduct irregular naval operations
    in the Chesapeake Bay. Operations were successful.
    Beall and crew captured and imprisoned at Fort McHenry.
    Returned to Richmond via prisoner exchange.
    Summer 1864, irregular naval operations resumed.
    Beall apprehended at Niagara Falls, charged with spying
    and other war related activities.
    Executed by hanging in New York City
    Last words:
    "I protest against execution. It is absolute murder.
    Brutal murder. I die in the service and defense
    of my country!"
